Meet the Founders

The team behind H55

Heading-up the Solar Impulse project together with Bertrand Piccard, André converted the vision of a solar airplane with unlimited autonomy into a reality by building up the technical team.

André lead the design, construction and testing of 2 Solar Impulse airplanes and managed flight missions. With the completion of the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe in a solar airplane without a drop of fuel, André flew the historical 5 day 5 night leg from Japan-to-Hawaii, a world record for the longest solo flight in an airplane of any kind.

Fueled by a drive to push technological and human boundaries of the possible, André’s passion for exploration is matched only by his persistence to promote sustainable and clean technologies.

Fascinated by aviation from his early youth, André learnt to fly with the Swiss air force and holds an assortment of professional airplane and helicopter pilot licenses. A graduate engineer from EPFL and holder of a management science degree from MIT, André entrepreneur career included successfully launching and selling several start-up companies. With this experience in aviation and business, André is well positioned to bring aviation to the next level in terms of energy efficiency.

As Executive Chairman of H55, André oversees strategy and aircraft design concepts.

CO-FOUNDER, finance & operations

Thomas has both extensive management and aviation expertise. Thomas’s career has included several management board positions as CEO and CFO for both entrepreneurial and multinational companies. Prior to joining H55, Thomas was CEO of the Swiss based Sotax Group, a world market leader in pharmaceutical testing instruments.

As a professional commercial helicopter rescue pilot with Air Zermatt --- in addition to being a fixed wing, IFR rated and a passionate aerobatic pilot --- Thomas mission experience includes 2’500 rescue operations and over 10’000 hours of flight experience.

This combined know-how in flight operations and business offers H55 an important asset in terms of building and commercializing propulsion solutions and configurations.

Thomas holds a Bachelor degree in Economics, a Masters degree in Finance and an MBA from the University St. Gallen.

At H55 Thomas is responsible for aircraft configuration, general management and finance.

CO-FOUNDER, structure & design

Dominique has extensive aviation and engineering experience. Dominique is a World Cup Champion in paragliding aerobatics and a Red Bull competition Pilot.

Dominique is widely recognized as being the inventor of many of today’s aerobatic maneuvers whereby he was inspired by his close friendship with the word renowned Red Bull Pilot, Hannes Arch. A passion for paragliding, Dominique developed and tested more than a dozen paragliders.

Dominique thus brings considerable expertise and experience in the area of flight static, aerodynamics, flight-testing and system integration.

Prior to joining H55, Dominique was part of the senior management team at Kissling & Zbinden, heading-up the engineering department with responsibility for projects totaling more than CHF 1 billion.

Dominique holds university degrees in civil engineering and project management including a Masters in Business.

At H55, Dominique is leading overall requirement definitions, technical development and integration.

CO-FOUNDER, electric propulsion technology

An electrical engineer by training and an avid Pilot, Sebastien was part of the Solar Impulse project early on. For the first Solar Impulse airplane, he headed up the electrical team responsible for the conception and assembly of the electric, battery and power management systems.

For the second airplane, Sebastien designed the system architecture and the development of the redundancies systems and fallback modes. Sebastien’s work at Solar Impulse earned him the prestigious AIAA aircraft design award for innovative design of a piloted all-electric aircraft.
An electrical engineer and aerobatics pilot, Sebastien, was educated at the Engineering School in Valais, Switzerland whereby he received an honors award for this diploma thesis as well as at the Münster Technical University in Germany.

His career started off at the Kudelski Group where he worked as a digital circuit and software engineer. Sebastien also worked on the Antares Electric Glider improving the battery management system.

His passion for clean technologies, has led him to work as a renewable energy manager for the Canton Valais innovation arm, CimArk.

At H55, Sebastien is leading the development of the power and energy Management systems.
